5 Unique Ways to Celebrate Indie Bookstore Day

This year, Indie Bookstore Day is April 29th, and we hope you’ll celebrate with us! Of course, one of the best things you can do on Indie Bookstore Day is support your local shop by bringing your friends in and buying a book. Making a social media post about the store to boost its presence is also helpful and so fun—we love seeing Dog-Eared Books from your eyes! But for those who’d like to add a little something special to their Indie Bookstore Day, here are five unique ideas for celebrating at Dog-Eared Books:

1. Try out our Indie Bookstore Day Passport

Every year, indie bookstores in Iowa get together to create a passport. Every time you stop at a store on the passport, you get a stamp. Have your passport stamped by seven local indies to be entered for prizes! It’ll be a big day going from bookstore to bookstore, and his passport provides the perfect opportunity to take an adventure and check out some new bookstores near you.

2. Brave the chaos of the crowd to complete our store scavenger hunt

Get to know us even better on Indie Bookstore Day! Our store has plenty of little secrets, loving touches, and little known histories scattered throughout the space. Follow the link above to see a printable scavenger hunt game you can play in store.

3. Try out a date at your local bookstore

Indie Bookstore Day will certainly be busy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy being surrounded by books with a loved one, whether that’s a romantic partner, friend, or family member. Just follow this convenient guide to a charming bookstore date, and we’ll have our beverage fridge, scones, and other baked goods waiting for you.

4. Read your new book in store

Feel free to keep your celebration low key. With couches, windows, and a fireplace, our loft is a comfy spot to read whichever book you pick up on this special day. Kick back, relax, and enjoy your next great read alongside the ambience of a bustling bookstore.

5. Dress up as your favorite literary character

Anyone who recognizes you will be delighted, and if you really want to go all out, you could offer “prizes” like a piece of candy or a sticker for anyone who guesses correctly. Check out the photos below for some costume inspiration.

Amanda as the Dung Beetle from I Eat Poop and Jess as Myrtle from Premediated Myrtle, as well as another conference attendee at Children’s Institute

Ava as Nick Nelson from the beloved YA Graphic Novel series Heartstopper

Thanks to you, Indie Bookstore Day is our biggest day of the year, and we always look forward to seeing everyone come out. And if you don’t live near Dog-Eared Books, never fear! We feel confident saying that there’s probably another amazing local bookstore near you, and that store is almost definitely celebrating Indie Bookstore Day in its own way. Go out and support its mission…maybe you can even try some of the ideas on this list while you’re there.

Emily

Emily (she/her) loves a good story in any genre...so much that she'll sacrifice sleep, food, and fresh air just to turn the page. When she finally manages to put a book down, though, she likes to conduct baking experiments, attempt art, wrestle with video games, and play D&D with her friends.
